green feet

Angela Valley

my girlfriend Meghan got married last Saturday. August 23rd, 2014. she is one of those women you meet and quickly learn how incredibly intelligent she is. she is witty, caring, and sassy. and i love her. her husband is a man with many feathers in his cap, but having green feet, well, that's a whole plume. let me explain...you see he is an in flight surgeon for the air force. he rides in a giant green helicopter, coined the nickname Jolly Green Giant. Alex (Meghan's husband) is there to do emergency surgery while on the Jolly Green. how incredible an honor and privilege it is to be so talented as to stay calm and perform surgery while riding in a helicopter? i digress. the rescuers from the Jolly Green earn their "green feet" after they save someone. Meghan was thoughtful for all of Alex's groomsmen and gave them green socks the day of the wedding explaining that this is their token of "green feet" since they have all in some way saved Alex. i started thinking about that and who better to have earned their green feet than Meghan! Meghan has been an emergency room nurse for five years and saved hundred of peoples lives ; in and out of the ER. so i wanted to create a green feet token for her to have. i went through all my gemstones and landed on some faceted emeralds. they are huge and gorgeous. in certain light you can see little galaxies of flecks of gold and rainbow coloring inside the stones. it's incredible.

Meg, you are a gem.

happy tears

my friend Karl approached me with a wonderful idea he had for a Christmas present to give to his mom. the two of them had gone on a trip together where they did some rock hounding. as they sifted through the rubble they found some beautiful amethyst, citrine, quartz, among many others others. Karl knew his mom had a blast during this special mother-son adventure and wanted to make that memory last.

i walked into our meeting, we spayed out the bag of goodies and started picking out our favorites. we agreed these seven stones were by far the coolest and they were deserving of being representatives of that great outing they shared.

i knew exactly how i wanted this to lay this design out as soon as i started dreaming up ideas. i go to work, and felt positive vibes while making this piece. i was chatting with Karl and telling him how commission pieces such as this get me quite verklempt. i think about how she will get to wear this moment she had with him each time she has it on. if you stop for a moment and ponder that thought you too may get teary eyed.

Karl later told me his mom cried with happiness when she opened her gift. i do not like sad tears but i do get warm fuzzies when someone has happy tears. it is all about the happy tears.

what a beautiful thing i get to do. seriously. i love my job. katie first came to me with a green, vintage powder box which once belonged to her grandmother. i lifted the lid and inside was amethyst, tourmalines, quartz, opals, garnets, among other gemstones. i was gleeful just thinking of the possibilities.

katie had originally contacted me to create a necklace from these stones for her mom (the daughter to the woman who collected all these gemstones). i made a beautiful necklace for her mom kathy. but this time, kathy came to me requesting a few pieces of jewelry be custom made for katie's birthday. i again got to work with these story-filled stones.

these are the pieces i came up with. i am ever so happy with the way they all turned out. i got a text from katie the night after i dropped them off at her house saying, "oh my goodness, angela. i love everything so much! just got home after working for 36 hours and i have to say pretty jewelry is an awesome thing to come home to!!!!"

this is why i do what i do. wear them in good health, katie. and always remember your grandmother is close to your heart, always.
